Youth and Family Summit
A big thank you to all those who raised a hand to make this year's Youth and Family Summit a resounding success. On April 28th, parents and youth came together at Lincoln high school to shed light on and discuss topics such as the opportunity gap, equity, and community wellness. Events like these help forge leaders, empower underrepresented voices, and set the stage for an on-going conversation on social change and engagement.
A special thank you to Janet Stewart for the photography below.
Cradle to Career

Across the country, communities are improving educational results by creating a civic infrastructure to support all kids cradle to career. Tacoma 360 is asking: Can we do this in Tacoma?
Originally developed by Strive in Cincinnati, the approach includes shared community vision, shared data measurement, collaborative action and aligned investment. To learn more check out this report from Education Sector which provides an in-depth look at where shared accountability works, and on how communities can use this approach to help all students succeed.
Find an Hour is recruiting and training 500+ tutors and mentors to work with children and teens in Tacoma Public Schools.
Students need our community’s help -- too many are not graduating from high school and not performing at grade level all along the way. But a caring adult committing an hour a week to spend with a child or teen for a year can make the difference. For example, studies have shown that children who receive one hour a week of tutoring over the school year increased their reading by a full grade level.
We know that a good education is the most promising pathway out of poverty and that by educating our children we create a safer, more prosperous community.
Find an Hour is a multiagency partnership committed mobilizing a cadre of tutors and mentors from across Tacoma. Partners to dateinclude Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Communities in Schools, Mentor 253, Northwest Leadership Foundation, REACH, Read 2 Me, Tacoma 360, Tacoma Community House, Tacoma Community College, Tacoma Public Schools, Trinity Presbyterian, Tacoma Urban League, write@253, and YMCA. New partners are welcome!
The campaign will run October 3, 2011 to January 30th, 2012. The schedule for Informational Meet and Greets is listed online, along with listings of volunteer opportunities for mentors and tutors. Check out the website at findanhour.org
